Vietnam man might be world’s oldest
The Guinness Book’s recent recognition of a 111-year-old Japanese man as the world’s oldest living person may be confounded following the discovery of a Vietnamese man apparently aged 113.
Doan Van Chan of the Mekong Delta’s An Giang province was remarkably sprightly when Thanh Nien met him last Thursday.
The ruddy, bearded Chan clearly recalled past events and remembered all the relatives living with him.
After becoming a widower at just 46, he opted to bring up his nine children alone.
He now lives with one son and two daughters with the oldest aged 85.
Thanh Nien also saw his ID card, issued in 1970, confirming he was born in 1894 in Nhon My commune in the province’s Long Xuyen town.
Thanh Nien asked if he had “inflated” his age to avoid enlistment in the last century.
But Chan’s brother, also 85, denied it saying the French colonialists had just focused on collecting a barrage of duties from farmers and not on enlisting them. So, there had been no need for Chan to fake his age.
Recipe for longevity
Chan revealed the secrets of his longevity: Eating lots of vegetables and fruits and drinking pints of clean water.
He was not a teetotaler and said drinking rice wine helped his tendons and bones function better.
But the most important reason for his longevity, he said, was his carefree attitude towards life and altruism.
Nguyen Minh Nhi, the leader of the province, told Thanh Nien that several Japanese news agencies had asked to interview Chan last month to learn why he had lived so long despite Vietnam’s various tribulations.
"I want to live…until 2020", Chan said when Thanh Nien asked how much longer he wanted to live.
